The exhibition, curated by Eli Okkenhaug, seeks to challenge and expand the viewer’s gaze in an area where art can be groundbreaking.
The sexualized individual is a recurring theme in popular culture, coming to expression through films, advertisements, newspapers, journals, internet blogs, video diaries and other media. Such phenomena reflect today’s attitudes towards sexuality, gender and the body, but how is sexuality expressed in contemporary art?
The exhibition is accompanied by a full-color catalog edited by Eli Okkenhaug, KODE – Art Museums and Composer Homes, Bergen, NO, 2012, ISBN 978-82-91808-5:
"The man's actions are accompanied by calls of encouragement on a voiceover. The same action on the part of the woman is depicted as something sordid. The work effectively comments on how one can perceive the sexuality of men and women in diametrically opposed ways, and that sexual initiative and sexual autonomy is still, in the eyes of many, restricted to male sexuality." (Eli Okkenhaug, catalog essay)
