An Artist in Residence grant awarded by Centre for Creative Industries (CCI) Fabrika, a Moscow, RU center for exhibitions, artists' workshops and creative production. Grant awarded by Asya Fillipovna, Director, CCI Proekt Fabrika.
This former paper factory, part of which is still functioning, became the perfect stage for the 2nd incarnation of Agnes Janich's Cleanliness is Goodliness, an installation of hand-engraved soaps, each representing one person with his / her name and profession. 21 of them engraved with the artist's name, their weight totalling that of my body fat. The piece echoes the WW2 practice of producing soaps from the Holocaust's victims dead bodies.
The Moscow installation of the project was performative, with participant's body fat being measured by the artist using a medical device and a corresponding weight of soap bars being hand-engraved with their name on the spot. Each participant was allowed to take a soap bar home, a gentle reminder of the fragility of life at times of conflict.
